The Arnold Sports Festival: 2012 Model PDF Print E-mail
Written by Jeff Glasser

Every year, auto enthusiasts anxiously await the new models of their favorite rides. New styling and features make things fresh while carryovers keep it familiar and comfortable. Likewise, buzz about the 2012 Arnold Sports Festival/Arnold Classic began on the social sites weeks before the first weekend in March. And it didn’t disappoint (although the monster in our header photo probably did scare a few toddlers).

One of the first high-visibility items was a new ‘hood ornament’: an eight-foot-high, 800-pound bronze statue of the event’s namesake. The statue, which is the second of two cast, was placed on the lawn of Veterans Memorial. The other statue is in Schwarzenegger’s home town of Thal, Austria, as part of a museum exhibit about his life.

What’s ‘familiar’ about the weekend is the crowds converging on our fair city from all over the world, the level of competition, and the expo.

Ah, yes…the expo!

The heart & soul of it all is that gathering of elbow-to-elbow masses, 700 vendor booths, the hundreds of drop-dead-gorgeous women staffing said booths, and the tens of thousands of eyeballs & cameras that seem to go with them. The styling is pretty much the same; just throw in a few new colors & fabrics.

2012 Arnold Sports Film Festival PDF Print E-mail

It seems only natural that if the founder and cornerstone of the Arnold Sports Festival became larger than life through motion pictures, then a competitive event for motion pictures would be part of the festival. Although it took a while to get off the ground, it gained altitude & speed quickly—much like the Harrier in “True Lies.”

The Arena Grand Movie Theatre was the venue for the second annual Arnold Sports Film Festival. One of the ‘Arnold’s’ newest events, it gave both seasoned and budding filmmakers an opportunity to flex their muscles through short-form storytelling; and in the spirit of competition, to go against one another for prizes. It is headed by Jim Hern, a Columbus-based veteran of commercial and video production. At the time, Hern said, "Arnold is real excited about what's happened here, and where we go next year, stay tuned!” (More on this later.)

This year’s theme was "Celebrating Sports Through History." The competition was divided into two divisions, one for international/professional submissions and the other for high school-aged entrants. There were over one hundred entries from eighteen countries for the former, and a lesser number (with only U.S. entries screened) for the latter. Winners were presented with an “Arnie,” a hand-made statuette from Germany’s Joska Crystal, and other prizes.

In addition to screening videos and keeping an eye pealed for the occasional celebrity passing through, there were workshops on various aspects of filmmaking. And, in the finest tradition of Hollywood glitz, the theater’s work-a-day lobby was transformed into something that screamed ‘special’, with a red carpet, logo backdrop, spotlights, velvet ropes, interviews, and photo ops.

2012 Arnold: Off-Campus Photo Shoots PDF Print E-mail

It’s simple logic: Take a few hundred of the most beautiful women in the world and cram ‘em into an area the size of downtown, then like flies drawn to a candy bar on the sidewalk, you’ll attract more GWCs (Guys With Cameras) than you can shake a stick at.

Need proof? Walk down the corridor of any hotel in the county and poke your head in a few doors. (Same goes with every photo studio…established or makeshift.) You’re likely to see softboxes, reflectors, and full-frame CanoNikonSonys by the hundreds.

As the Arnold Classic brings in the finest bodybuilders in the world, it also draws some of the finest photographers in the world. Their names may not be familiar to you, but you’ve seen their work on the covers of the magazines at the supermarket checkout. Likewise, there will also be a large contingent of wanna-be fitness photographers (called ‘schmoes’) with lesser CanoNikonSonys around their necks, trying to convince any of these hot ladies to shoot with them.

2012 Arnold DanceSport PDF Print E-mail

OK, so not everybody who competes at the Arnold carries boulders over burning coals. There’s room enough for everybody, even those folks who enjoy Puttin’ on the Ritz every now and then. Follow the signs to the Hyatt Grand Ballroom, just in time for the DanceSport competition.

DanceSport is actually two nearly-identical, yet unconnected, events, divided by age groups.

Friday’s event, the 50+ DanceSport Challenge, is in its third year. It is believed to be the only event of its type in the country, where seniors compete in everything from classic ballroom dances to today’s Latin steps. Director Mike Lorz describes it as an opportunity for dancers who are still good but who don’t feel they can compete against the twenty-somethings.

As a competition, participants need to lead with their best foot, and quickly—the music for each dance runs less than a minute-and-a-half. Trophies are awarded to champions and participants alike.

Cyclefest 2012 PDF Print E-mail

It is pure irony that on one of the few days when snowy weather made it risky to ride a motorcycle, a regional bikers’ fair called “Cyclefest” made its debut at Ohio Expo Center. The combination builders’ expo/trade show/swap meet was launched in Dayton in 2011, and will be hitting about a half-dozen cities before the year is out.

A first walk-through lets one get a feel for the event. There are vendors who cater to the serious motorcyclist, vendors who will sell their non-related product at any venue, and custom builders. The second walk-through is when patrons will take some time and peruse the offerings in more detail, and this is when the culture begins to come into focus.

One thing quickly becomes clear: Beyond the bottom-rockers, black t-shirts, and chained wallets lies the heart & soul of proud, old-world craftsmen. They toil in musty garages. They load in tires, frames, and engines—either new-in-boxes or dripping fluids from previous use; and weeks (or months) later they will emerge with works of art on wheels. It’s these independent Midwest builders that Cyclefest seeks to emphasize.
